Almost 80 million American households own a pet, with four in five planning to buy holiday presents for their furry and feathered friends this year, a Petco survey this month found. That comes as pet spending this year is forecast to grow 4.4 percent to an all-time high of $60.59 billion, with the biggest percent increase coming from services such as grooming, boarding, training, daycare and even pet spa services.

“Increases in spending are being led by both ends of the pet owning spectrum - aging baby boomers paying more to provide care for their pets and younger Gen Y owners who prefer the conveniences of high-tech and pampering products and services,” Bob Vetere, president and CEO of the American Pet Products Association, said in a statement earlier this year.
Spending on supplies—such as pet beds, water and food bowls, collars and toys—is expected to increase 4.7 percent to $14.39 billion this year, with some of that coming this holiday season.
