Threats Against Congress Turn Violent

Ten Democrats and two Republicans say they’ve been threatened by violent vigilantes who are angry about passing the health care reform bill. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., got a fax with a picture of a gallows. An envelope filled with white powder was sent to Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., along with an abusive, hateful letter. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio, released a profane, threatening phone message accusing her and other Republicans of being racists. And House Republican Whip Eric Cantor said someone shot a bullet through his window in Richmond, Virginia. So far, no arrests have been made, and the accusatory rhetoric among Democrats and Republicans has not abated.
