Could any of us diehard coffee drinkers ever imagine our a mornings without a delicious cup of our favorite drink? Now, boosted by the findings of a major new study, we don’t have to.
Twelve billion pounds of coffee is consumed around the world each year, and the U.S. alone has more than 130 million coffee drinkers. Sixty-five percent of us who drink coffee consume an average of 13 cups of coffee each week.

There are, of course, books, blogs, magazines and websites devoted to nothing but coffee and the complex processes involved in growing it, brewing it, bringing it to market, and serving it. The folks at the website coffeegeek.com, for example, offer a list of holiday gift ideas related to coffee (both high end and low end); while a company in upstate New York, the Death Wish Coffee Company, claims it produces “the most highly caffeinated premium dark roast organic coffee in the world” (disclaimer: we haven’t tried it). Brazil is the world’s biggest exporter of coffee – while Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. where coffee is actually grown.
