WATCH: John Oliver on the Irresistible Evil of the World Cup

HBO

Can all of the tension surrounding the upcoming World Cup in Brazil — including disruptive protests, misappropriated money, and infrastructure problems — be summed up into one 13-minute video?

HBO’s John Oliver certainly tried. In a rant on his Sunday night show, Last Week Tonight, Oliver dissected all the ethical conflicts surrounding FIFA, soccer’s governing body, and its enormously popular quadrennial tournament.

Oliver hardly left any FIFA scandal untouched, from the group’s financial demands on World Cup host countries to the controversy surrounding the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. Soccer may be a worldwide religion, Oliver said, but the group running it is “comically grotesque.”

And yet, Oliver said, he’s still so excited about the World Cup. Him and the rest of the world.
