With 44 states facing budget shortfalls in the coming fiscal year, it’s no wonder some are resorting to unorthodox measures to raise revenue. Colorado recently revised its definition of what constitutes an “essential” food item to make those plastic lids taxable. Other states, such as Texas and California, are considering taxing sugary soft drinks to fill their coffers. For sure, the discerning taxpayer also can find an offbeat break or two.
