Whether you call it food design, food creation or food invention, unconventional food items seem to have spread everywhere.
They even have their own TV show.

In “Frankenfood,” which started airing on Spike TV at the end of June, contestants are searching for the new food craze by cooking weird food combinations like fried peanut butter and jelly fish sticks.
Crazy food inventions aren’t always about odd combinations though and don’t always have to emanate from chefs.
Sometimes, it takes a very simple idea, like when a candy store owner decided to put real insects in a lollypop after drinking Mescal, a type of tequila with a worm in the bottle.
Other times, cutting-edge technology like 3D printing can revolutionize the world of food and give us 3D printed candies. Or scientists can follow their life-long love of ice cream and come up with color-changing ice cream.
Whether these foods were invented by design firms, celebrity chefs, scientists or restaurant chains, they all have one thing in common: they don’t look too appetizing.
