11 Incredibly Strange College Majors

Paramount

Among the millions of new college graduates scrambling to enter the job market this summer are a select group of students with some rather … unique degrees.

Sure, employers will see the usual slew of econ and English majors. But hidden in that big stack of resumes could be the student who spent thousands learning how to legally grow marijuana, go whitewater rafting, or write lyrics like the Beatles.

To be fair, the most common majors are still business administration and psychology, according to the Princeton Review, but more unique and specifically-tailored degree programs have been cropping up across the world. Oaksterdam University in California recently opened as “America’s first cannabis college.” It prepares students for careers in the pot industry in states like Colorado and Washington where marijuana is now legal for recreational use.

Then there’s the University of Connecticut’s puppetry program, which, according to the program’s website, became so popular that the school had to limit enrollment. Graduates have gone on to perform and design for theaters around the world. Some have also worked for internationally recognized television programs like “Between the Lions.”

Of course, job prospects vary wildly for these specialties. While a cannabis degree graduate may land a decent paying job in the growing marijuana industry, those majoring in puppetry or the Beatles might find that their degrees are less useful in the real world. There are exceptions, however. The first graduate of the Beatles’ program offered at Liverpool Hope University in the U.K. is Canadian singer who is now teaching music in Ontario (of course, enrolling in an actual program devoted to the Fab Four instead of simply listening to the White Album is something only Maxwell Edison would do). Regardless, here are a few of the world’s most unique college majors.
