Pet Euthanasia

The Humane Society estimates that the number of dogs and cats euthanized every year in the United States has dropped from 12−20 million in the 1970s to about 4 million today. During that period, the number of dogs and cats we adopted as  pets doubled from 67 million to more than 135 million. An HSUS spokesperson credits the drop in euthanasia to a huge increase in spaying and neutering stray animals and new pets, along with more responsible pet ownership.
