As we described last week, some blue state politicians are looking for ways around new tax rules that limit annual state and local tax deductions to $10,000.
Affluent taxpayers in high-tax states such as New York and California face higher tax bills as a result of the tax overhaul, and some communities may face pressure to lower local taxes and reduce services.
But while the financial stakes are serious, there may be a benefit for the politicians who are leading the fight, according to Politico.
New York Gov. Mario Cuomo, a potential presidential candidate who has described the new tax rules as “economic civil war,” is raising his national profile as he leads the charge against the Republican tax overhaul.
“In a funny way, Cuomo’s been handed a political gift here,” Hofstra University’s Larry Levy said, adding that “putting the state on war footing, invoking the language of conflict, is a brilliant political strategy.”
