GTA San Andreas (2004)
Rather appropriately, the GTA franchise was famously created by a traffic accident. A glitch in a simple driving game caused police cars to chase you after you hit them. The developers soon realized that this was much more fun than what they were originally trying to create, and the rest is gaming history. By the time of San Andreas, the series had become more wildly experimental, allowing users to do much as they pleased in a video game analog of the West Coast while simultaneously giving them engaging stories and a rocking soundtrack. The age of the “Open World” had begun.
