Only Nixon Could Go to Laugh-In
By 1968, Nixon already had a long -- and not always happy -- history of memorable TV moments. But as part of an effort to rebrand him as the "new Nixon," Nixon made an unlikely September appearance on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In." As TV writer David Bianculli noted, "Nixon managed, in a single sentence, to convey more of a good-sport persona, and a sense of humor, than during most of the rest of his campaign." Nixon's delivery of the line "Sock it to me?" may have helped him win the White House.
