By 2030, all Baby Boomers will be older than 65, meaning that one in five U.S. residents will be of retirement age, the Census Bureau reports. And by 2035, seniors will outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history, the Census Bureau projects, with 78 million people 65 years and older compared to 76.4 million under the age of 18.

A couple of other demographic data points from the Census: By 2020, there will be about 3.5 working-age adults for every retirement-age person. By 2060, that ratio will fall to just 2.5 working-age adults for every retirement-age person, putting a greater strain on welfare programs such as Social Security.
