$1,000 for Every American?

More lawmakers are beginning to think that the best way to combat the coronavirus recession is to hand out cold, hard cash, and on Monday Sen. Mitt Romney proposed to give every American adult $1,000 to boost an economy reeling from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The checks would “help ensure families and workers can meet their short-term obligations and increase spending in the economy,” the Republican lawmaker from Utah said in a statement.

The proposal is similar to one put forth by former Obama economic adviser Jason Furman in The Wall Street Journal two weeks ago.

Saying that Congress will need to provide additional support to the economy above and beyond the House bill currently consideration in the Senate, Romney also proposed a grant program run by the Small Business Administration to cover short-term costs including payroll and rent; assistance for students facing unexpected expenses this year; deferment of student loan payments; and a temporary requirement that health insurance plans provide telehealth services in order to “protect the health workforce and connect patients with providers.”
