Arkansas maintained its spot as the 48th healthiest state in the country. On average, Arkansas is experiencing slower decreases in smoking and faster increases in obesity than the rest of the country. The state has the fewest dentists per capita, which relates to public health since periodontal disease is associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other health issues.
Strengths: Low prevalence of excessive drinking; high Tdap immunization coverage among adolescents; small disparity in health status by educational attainment.
Challenges: High prevalence of obesity; high prevalence of smoking; high prevalence of frequent mental distress.
