Every seven seconds, a worker is injured on the job, according to the National Safety Council.

No matter what type of work you do, there’s a chance of getting injured, although the risk is far greater in some industries than others.

A new report from Travelers insurance finds that 30 percent of workplace injuries were sprains and strains, and they were most common among manufacturing and retail workers. The average strain or sprain led to 57 days of missed work, with an average cost to the employer of $17,000.

After strains and sprains, the most common injuries were cuts and punctures, comprising nearly a fifth of all reported injuries, costing an average of $8,200 per incident and 24 days out of work.

Among the most common injuries, inflammation such as tendinitis led to the most time away from work, with workers averaging more than 90 days off the job.

Material handling (lifting, lowering, emptying or carrying an item) was the most common cause of an injury, accounting for nearly a third of all claims. Slips, trips, and falls made up 16 percent of reported injuries, and 10 percent of those injured at work were struck by or collided with an object.

The most expensive injuries were amputations, which cost more than $100,000 per claim, and multiple traumas, which cost $50,000.
